Within Temptation’s Sharon den Adel Talks New Album Resist

Interview by Jonathan Matthews

We had a chance to speak with the lovely Sharon den Adel, vocalist of Dutch symphonic metal band Within Temptation. We talked about the band’s new album ‘Resist’, which has just been released, and the unfortunate delays in the release date. We also chatted about their collaboration with Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach, and the possibility of seeing Within Temptation on Australian shores in the near future.

SR. Your new album ‘Resist’ is being released soon, how are you feeling about that?

I’m really happy about it! Unfortunately, it has been delayed by six weeks, something went wrong in the production factory, I’m not really sure what, something to do with the CD’s. That sucks, but I can’t wait for it to finally be released and for everyone to hear it.

SR. That is unfortunate, how are you feeling about that?

Well, you know, it’s a bit disappointing, our fans were expecting to have it in time for Christmas, and we hate feeling like we may have let them down. It is only six weeks, and I’m sure our fans will still love it when it is released. It’s just something unfortunate that we have to wait for.

SR. Perhaps it is a blessing in disguise, having a release early next year could mean the album will be a staple for the New Year. It also makes it stand out against the many albums that get released around Christmas.

We hope so. It’s always so busy this time of the year, especially releasing music. We’re up against a lot of different music, there are so many Christmas albums being released. It will be great when the record is finally out there for the world to hear.

SR. On your track ‘The Reckoning’, you collaborated with Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach. How did that come about?

That was our choice, we never really listen to record companies *laughs*. When we write something, what we think is the most important is really focusing on the sound. We look at what the track needs, and then we approach somebody who we think can give the song what it needs. We met Jacoby a few years ago at a huge music festival in Belgium. We ran into each other backstage and had a really nice conversation about our bands, songwriting, and art. He is a really enthusiastic person with a lot of energy, and I thought he could make something great happen with that song. I had recorded the song already with my vocals front to back, and we were just about to make a video for it when I had the idea. We were able to make it happen really quickly. We sent the songs to him and he liked them, so he recorded his parts in his own studio at home, and it was all done in time to make it onto the record. We’re really grateful that he did that, since his band was recording their album at the same time. He gave a great edge to it, the song is really something special and amazing now. We loving working with other people and every song as good as we possibly can. We can learn so much from other people, and it’s great to work with people who can add something to the song that we can’t on our own. It all worked out really well. Our guitar player is going to sing that part when we tour, he can do it pretty well, so it’s all working out really well.

SR. You have a lot of vision for your work, that’s great!

Thankyou. It’s really fun to work with other people, we loving getting to know other artists and learning from them. We’ve collaborated with so many amazing artists, and it’s always a great time working with them and getting to know each other. It’s always a great experience, and when you’ve been a bands as long as we have, it’s nice to keep that door open and to have fun, and keep it fresh.

SR. Are you planning on coming to Australia any time soon?

We’ve always tried to go to Australia and combine it with other countries like japan, but it hasn’t worked out for us so far unfortunately. It’s a bit difficult since it’s so far away, and it takes a lot of time to do. It depends on how things are going and what else we are doing at the time, but we’d really love to go there soon. We just have to wait for the right, I can’t make promises on when, but I’m sure when the time is right it will all fall into place. I’ve been to Australia myself and I love it over there, I toured the country in a van when I was younger, I’d love to be able to go there with the band. I remember being eaten alive by mosquitos, but it was a really lovely trip.

SR. Where is your favourite place in the world to tour?

We have so many wonderful memories from everywhere we have toured, especially when we get to go somewhere for the first time, that’s always really exciting. You never know what you’re gonna get, it creates a certain atmosphere, I love it. There’s always something new and something unexpected, every country is different. For instance, Japan is always so different from somewhere like Brazil.

People in Brazil are very expressive and they tend to make a spectacular mess while they’re having fun, whereas in Japan they are very respectful, when you speak, everyone goes silent and listens, when they leave the venue everything is still clean and tidy. It’s so different between each country. At signings they lined up nicely at the table, rather than fighting for a place in line, which happens in some countries. I love it, it’s such a beautiful way to experience the world.

SR. If you could collaborate with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be?

It’s hard for me to say. We choose people from song to song, so it would really depend on the music that we write. The list of people that we would love to work with is endless, there are so many talented people out there, and the most important thing is choosing somebody who can really benefit the song.

SR. Have you got any final messages for your fans in Australia?

I really hope you all enjoy the new album. We’ll keep our fingers crossed, and hopefully we will get to come and tour over there soon!

Keep up to date with Within Temptation by following them on social media and their website. You can check out their music on Spotify and iTunes and remember to keep an ear out for their new album Resist in the New Year. If you like what you hear, spread the word, and hopefully we can see Within Temptation visiting the Land of Oz in the near future.
