Interview: Craig Chaney of Evergreen Terrace talks Soundwave and more!

Four-piece American band, Evergreen Terrace were formed in 1999 with the band’s name stemming from popular TV show, The Simpsons. It’s safe to say that lead vocalist, Craig Chaney was excited about the Soundwave shows and was more than stoked to be coming back to Australia. The band had toured already been to the country for their Cheer Up, Emu Kid Tour in 2010 and also had the opportunity to experience Soundwave Festival in its early years back in 2009.

We did in 2009 and we didn’t think that we’d be able to do it again, so this year we’re a little surprise that we’re part of lineup. We are completely stoked. We’re pretty excited to come back and I mean,  it’s one of my favourite places to tour. Soundwave is probably the best tour that I can remember being on as far as start to finish – just from the shows to the bands, even getting opportunities to do things like this, especially for a band in our level. We’re appreciative and beyond happy that we’re coming back.”

“..Popular culture referencing is part of our chemistry.

Describing the crowd reactions of their songs is no surprise for Evergreen Terrace. Chaney explained how much fun the shows were as all too often or not, the crowd provided endless entertainment – from the circle pits to the mosh pits. As a melodic hardcore/metalcore band, this was something that naturally happened when the band played live.

In Europe, it’s one of those things where there’s spots that you play where literally kids go nuts for new songs and old songs. Usually the reaction overall has been pretty consistent. There seems to be a lot of circle pits but that’s good for me.”

After releasing their 2013 record, Dead Horses, one thing that was consistent about this band was the popular culture references embedded in their title tracks and lyrics. With the band naming themselves after a popular TV series, it was obvious that this was something that kept them creatively energised when it came to writing new material. As Chaney explained it, he began to note that this was essentially what made them Evergreen Terrace.

When you’re in the writing process, sometimes it’s the working title where we say, “Hey, we’re just gonna call it whatever for now” and then it sticks; or sometimes if it’s a working title that actually ends up working with the lyrics a little bit, you know or kind of representing it a little bit; and sometimes it’s just a joke. We’re just big fans [of The Simpsons] from the name of the band, obviously. We’re big fans of pop culture; we watch too many movies, shows and cartoons. Popular culture referencing is part of our chemistry.”
