The Bamboos are playing their first show in over 18 months this New Year’s Eve. Bringing a touch of funk soul goodness to the plans, it’s the perfect way to let your hair down and round up 2016 and ring in the new year. The Bamboos have a giant funk presence in the Australian music scene with a voracious live show experience not to be missed.
Lance Ferguson, of The Bamboos, kindly answered some of the questions we had about their show and what’s next for the band in the New Year.
What can fans expect from your NYE’s show at The Basement?
We have been in the studio all December recording a brand-new album, so we’re looking forward to pulling out some world premiere never-played-live-before songs on the night!
What is your favourite song to perform live?
I’m going to have to say a song called ‘The Truth’, which is from our ‘Fever In The Road’ record. It’s a slow builder and Kylie Auldist- just tears it to pieces every time.
It’s your first time playing The Basement since 2006. It is a pretty intimate venue – do you prefer those smaller shows or big crowds?
I used to think that there was a difference in the approach between performing in small rooms vs festival shows – but more and more I think that we always just come out and try to get the same level of intensity in either setting. We started out playing at small venues with people dancing up close and personal – So it’s always great to be back in a small room where you can interract with people on a really personal, visceral level
What is at the top of your New Year’s resolution list?
Less time staring at screens. #BlackMirror
So you are releasing an new album next year, what it will sound like?
Style Council with breakbeats…
How has the songwriting process differed from your previous records?
Same as always: It begins with me locking myself away in my home studio for months and getting the basis of the album together. Then when I am just about on the brink of insanity, Kylie, the band and co-producer John Castle will come in and help me finish it all off.
Other than a new album, what have The Bamboos got planned for 2017?
The album will come out in the second half of the new year – And we’re really looking forward to touring it both here and overseas, as it’s been a little while since we have gotten over to Europe and the U.K.
