‘Hentai Kamen 2: The Abnormal Crisis’ – JFF 2016 Review

Thanks to the Japan Foundation of Australia, we had the chance to see Hentai Kamen 2: The Abnormal Crisis before its Australian debut at this year’s Japanese Film Festival.

hk2-abnormal-crisis-4Kyosuke (Ryohei Suzuki) returns to save the day as superhero Hentai Kamen, who wears girls’ underwear on his face in order to unleash the might of his perverted power.

Once again, Kyosuke struggles to balance his life as vigilante, student and boyfriend of classmate Aiko (Fumika Shimizu), something that forced him to try to withdraw from his hero-duties. However, not all goes according to plan as the undies that belong to all the girls in town mysteriously begin to go missing. And this is reason enough for the perv-hero to rise again.

Hentai Kamen 2, could be considered as a parody of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2, as it follows almost exactly the same formula, but with the addition of way too many silly scenes that become tiresome after the first 30 minutes.

The film truly tests a viewer’s patience, with a lot of over-the-top acting and crotch-related attacks, plus way too many things going on at once, including robots and returning bad guys.

At its best, Hentai Kamen 2, feels like an average episode of the Power Rangers, as it stills manages to amuse and deliver some laughs. But it’s so lacking in innovation that the 118 minutes feel like an eternity.
