‘Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues’ Blu-Ray Review

Thanks to Paramount Home entertainment we got the chance to see Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues on Blu-Ray, a release that includes the theatrical version of this comedy hit as well as the super-sized version, a different cut  with 763 new jokes.

ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUESAfter its release in 2004, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy became an instant cult classic, and for many years fans pushed the cast and director Adam McKay to do a sequel, something that finally happened in 2013 with Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, David Koechner and Christina Applegate reprising their iconic roles for Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues. The sequel lived up to the high exptectations, becoming another instant classic and a huge box office success world-wide. You can have a look at our movie review of the film here.

The first film’s DVD & Blu-Ray came with the added bonus of “Wake Up Ron Burgundy” , an additional film that was not shown in cinemas. The home entertainment release of “ Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues” follows the same concept  with a kind of 1.5 version of the movie, made by including deleted scenes. The result is a different film that is 143 minutes long (25 minutes longer than the theatrical version) , which keeps the same plot, but includes totally different jokes (763 to be exact).

anchorman 2 battleThe super-sized version has everything that fans can expect from a 1.5 version of the film, and as the film was originally planned to be a Broadway musical, it also includes more songs with the cast dancing along as well as extended versions of the songs already in the film. In addition the epic final battle, perhaps one of the best scenes ever made for any comedy, is longer, so expect to see more of John C. Reilly’s ghost this time around. And don’t worry, Kanye West still dies.

It’s obviously risky to release a different version of a film that audiences loved, and despite some hilarious bits the overall feeling is not the same. That goes especially for the sequences involving the RV crash, Burgundy’s blindness and Doby the shark.

Anchorman 2The extras are solid though, and the amount of additional material is simply perfect, with a Behind-The-Scenes that will take viewers trough the musical bits, and a making of the RV sequence and the hard process involved in filming it. We also get to see The return of Baxter and the introduction of Doby the shark, and of course there is an inside look at the News team epic fight, including some words from some of the celebrities involved.

If all that was not enough, you can also watch some further deleted scenes, extended and alternative cuts, as well as previsualizations, some auditions for the film and a Gag reel.  The funniest of all these extra feature is called “Benefit For 826LA: Spoiler Alert”. We won’t spoil it for you by explaining what it is about, instead we’re just going to give you the main reason to see it: a very special performance by Jack Black.
