Thanks to 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, we were able to watch the third season of the epic adventures of Ragnar Lothbrok, as Vikings Season 3 arrives on DVD & Blu-Ray.
Following the events of Season 2, Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) and his Nordic comrades and family members, including Rollo (Clive Standen), Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick), Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig), Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård) prepare to expand their domain. By raiding England, they aim to establish a better future for upcoming generations, enjoying the country’s fertile lands and abundant natural resources.
In order to guarantee his success, Ragnar forms an alliance with the current king, vowing to destroy his enemies, in exchange for land for his own people. Unsurprisingly, this is no mean feat, since each side worships different gods and, as a result of this spiritual conflict, rivalries soon begin to take shape. The Norse warriors, however, prove to be relentless, even as they watch comrades fall during their longest quest so far, and one which takes them from the verdant shores of Essex to the mythical city of Paris.
While this is taking place, back in their village and far from England, a mysterious man appears who seems to possess magic powers; and, before long, the villagers seem convinced that he may actually be a God in disguise.
Vikings seems to get better and better with every successive season. The lush production beautifully recreates Norse legends, and the introduction of fascinating new characters each season serves to add interest to an already wonderful cast. The team behind the series have also flawlessly balanced the violence and drama throughout Ragnar’s journey: the episodes are by turns intense and thought-provoking.
This season’s cast is, once again, superb: Travis Fimmel shines as Ragnar, as usual, but this time there is greater opportunity for other characters to shine, especially Katheryn Winnick (Lagertha) whose interest in a new love may bring unexpected repercussions. Additionally, Linus Roache is great in the role of King Ecbert, an enigmatic character who adds further intrigue to the plot.
The battles, art direction, special effects and, especially, the locations are impressive. This season also sees a considerable increase in the number of people in the battle seasons.
The Blu-Ray release is packed with fantastic additional features, the most interesting of which are an interactive exploration of the various Gods from Norse mythology, Athelstan’s Journal, a political view of King Ragnar’s Rule, behind the scenes at the Paris attack, and extended/deleted scenes.
