Adventure Time (Collection 4): Fionna and Cake is a weird take on the popular hit from cartoon network, as it takes place in a kind of bizarro world in which Finn is a girl and Jake is a cat. However, that’s just one iconic episode, as the DVD compilation includes a total of 16 episodes, with Death In Bloom and Princess Cookie standing out as some of the best ones.
Needless to say, Adventure Time is a series that takes a while to get into, and it might not be every single viewer’s cup of tea; the animation is far from advanced, and the stories sometimes seem to be targeting a more mature audience. Yet somehow this series still manages to be a hit for kids.
In addition, Lumpy Space Prince (the male version of Lumpy Space Princess) is also included in the Fionna and Cake episode, bringing some extra comedy relief to the story and filling in as a worthy replacement for Prince Gumball and Marshall ‘Vampire King’ Lee, who are not part of that specific episode.
Overall, Adventure Time (Collection 4): Fionna and Cake is a must have for fans of the series, due to the unique touch that artist Natasha Allegri brings to each character on the show. The simple narrative leaves you with a message about ‘physical beauty versus admiration’, and as a consequence this release could be more easily targeted to a female audience. However, of the sixteen eleven-minute episodes that there are to enjoy surely at least some of them will appeal to you, even if you are not a follower of this weird but popular cartoon.
Adventure Time (Collection 4): Fionna and Cake is now available on DVD in Australia from Madman. The DVD collection also includes the “Little Did You Know” special feature, which is a fan favourite, as it includes character profiles from the series’ most bizarre characters.
