Star Wars Battlefront II – Review

EA’s Battlefront II is finally in stores, bringing the best of the Star Wars universe to your gaming console.

After the slightly disappointing (but addictive) first game in 2015. EA had the challenge of responding to all the feedback from the fans and delivering a bigger, bolder and more epic Star Wars experience capable of including all three trilogies. This has been achieved perfectly, as players now can play as Rey, Kylo Ren, Darth Maul, Chewbacca, Boba Fett, Luke Skywalker, Yoda, the Emperor, Princess Leia and obviously Darth Vader. But that’s not all as two fan-favourites also join the galaxy far, far away, with Lando Calrissian and Boosk the Bounty Hunter making their gaming debut.

Players can immerse themselves in multiple gaming modes, from Multiplayer (sadly you need a PlayStation Plus account for it) to Arcade mode and Campaign. Campaign mode is a huge highlight as it brings to life a new chapter in the Star Wars saga, with players taking the role of Imperial commander Iden Versio, leader of the Inferno Squad who, after the destruction of the second Death Star, needs to carry out the Emperor’s final order. This story, through the player’s controls, unveils a strong link between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. During the campaign players are also capable to play as Han Solo, Luke, Leia, Lando and even take control of the Millennium Falcon… Pure gold!

Game play is fun, similar to the previous Battlefront releases. However, here it’s easier to be killed, which can be a bit frustrating due to the loading times the system requires each time you need to deploy troops, something that obviously is also affected by the internet connection (sorry, Australian players with slow internet).

One of the most enjoyable things is the space battles, where you can earn enough points to unlock and play with the two variations of the Millennium Falcon, Kylo Ren’s yet-to-be-seen Silencer, Vader’s iconic TIE Fighter Advanced, Luke and Poe’s X-Wings and even (insert fanboy tears) Boba Fett’s Slave One. The space battles take place everywhere, from Kamino to the asteroid fields, and the missions include protecting Imperial destroyers or take out the reactors or shields of the Mon Calamari Cruisers.

In multiplayer, gamers can participate in a 4-on-4 battle of heroes versus villains where your Jedi, Sith or Bounty Hunter skills will be tested.

Overall, Battlefront II is the game Star Wars fans always dreamt of. It has everything you could wish for, space battles, iconic characters, a new untold chapter linking trilogies and a huge amount of gaming possibilities, especially if you equip a good set of cards to increase the skills of your ships, troops or heroes. A must-play, and may the force be with you!
