This is not a game! – ‘Taken 2’ Movie Review

Thanks to 20th Century Fox, we had the chance to see Olivier Megaton’s Taken 2 before its Australian cinematic release. This is our review of the film – but as usual – no matter what we say; we recommend that you still go to your local cinema and see the film because: There is no better critic than yourself!

Taken 2 follows the story of retired CIA agent Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson), now working in private security months after the events in the first Taken movie. Mills became closer to his ex-wife Leonore (Famke Janssen) who is facing a new separation and his daughter Kim (Maggie Grace) who has a boyfriend which Mills doesn’t approve of.

While working in Istanbul, Mills is joined by his family for a vacation. However, it all changes when he and his wife are taken hostage by Murad (Rade Serbedzija), the father of one of the kidnappers Mills killed with an electric chair in order to rescue his daughter.

Taken 2 gathers the basic elements that made the first film a blockbuster, as Liam Neeson once again takes on the role of a passive and very dangerous action hero. Yet this film lacks the brutality of its predecessor, as this time Neeson’s character is a little more protective of his family. Nevertheless, as soon as he is alone facing his enemies, he unleashes his ruthless side who kills everyone in his way, be it shooting, using chains or fist combat.

The addition of Mill’s family in a protagonist position is a risky move but it still works to distinguish this film from the previous one, as Leonore is the damsel-in-distress and Kim a side kick for his dad, driving around Istambul on the run or throwing grenades in the city.

Action is everywhere in the film of course as Liam Neeson digs his roots as Batman’s mentor Ra’s al Ghul, showcasing some amazing martial arts including an impressive one-on-one fight against a terrorist. Moreover, another highlight of this sequel is the difference in action sequences, despite being an instant follow-up to the previous film.

Overall, Taken 2 is a fun flick full of action and intensity that will delight all the fans who enjoyed the first film. We guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

Taken 2 opens in Australia on 4 October 2012 from Fox
