On 30 June 2012, Sydney’s iconic State Theatre hosted the Australian premiere for the new local hit The Sapphires, following many successful screenings overseas, such as a standing ovation in Cannes.
Local celebrities attended the red carpet, including writers, actors like the always gorgeous Sarah Snook, Hugo Johnstone-Burt and Red Dog‘s John Batchelor, plus musicians like The Voice contenders Chris Sebastian and Brittany Cairns, Australian Idol winner Stan Walker and X Factor and Pop sensation Reece Mastin, just to name a few.
All eye were also on director Wayne Blair, producers Rosemary Blight and Kylie Du Fresne, executive producer Ben Grant, co-writers Tony Brigs and Keith Thompson, and the stars of the film Jessica Mauboy, Deborah Mailman and Miranda Tapsell. Moreover, the original Sapphires in which the film is based on also attended the event.
We had the chance to talk to the entire cast at the premiere about the first time they got the script, their insight on the Australian film industry, their next projects and of course their reaction on the screening in Cannes. Check our interviews below:
Led off by the director’s and casts’ official speech, we started to watch the film concluded by a well-deserved standing ovation (see our movie review here). But that was not all, as Jessica Mauboy had a surprise in store for everyone, performing some songs from the film in a mini concert format, making the premiere an unforgettable event to kick off a new Australian classic to our screen.
Here enjoy some postcards of the event below:
The Sapphires is now showing in Australian cinemas and it’s a must see film!
