‘Vatican Miracle Examiner’ Review

Thanks to Madman we had the chance to see the complete series of Vatican Miracle Examiner on Blu-ray.

The series follows Priests Josef Hiraga and Roberto Nicholas who specialize in unveiling the truth behind miracles around the world. In order to approve or discredit countless cases, from crucifixes that change colour to dead prophets capable of seeing the future to virgins getting pregnant, the pair are always testing their faith as some cases seem impossible to explain.

Vatican Miracle Examiner is a fun series, but it’s exhausting due to the amount of information delivered during each episode. Think The X-Files but without comedic moments and with Catholic priests instead of FBI agents, one of whom takes a scientific approach while the other bases all in what he learn from various books.

The series is surprisingly brave in that despite opening with a disclaimer about being a work of fiction, it still touches on very delicate issues that have the Catholic Church in the spotlight today, such as child molestation, links to big corporations, drugs and false prophets among others.

Overall, Vatican Miracle Examiner is finally something a bit different from conventional anime, and despite being tiresome at first it becomes a rollercoaster of twists, turns, crimes and lies.
