Directed by Cowboy Bebop’s Shinichirō Watanabe, “Space Dandy” is literally the story of a “Dandy” who travels across the galaxy to discover unregistered aliens. Every new species earns him a reward, which he usually spends at “Boobies,” his favourite intergalactic place (just imagine a Hooters restaurant in space).
“Space Dandy” is a fun and very random anime series that totally lives up to its name. Put simply, “It’s a Dandy in Space”; just imagine a silly version of the amazing, timeless classic, Space Adventure Cobra, but with an anti-hero as the lead (who isn’t even capable of hitting his enemies with his space gun, as he is always more concerned about his hair and appearance while in battle).
The characters in general are funny and well enough developed to make them your new anime favourites – especially Meow, who, despite being a horny alien cat lookalike, changes entirely, in the most random situations, such as when he plays with a hologram like a true kitten, while not paying any attention at all to a hot chick standing next to him.
The episodes feature some villains that for some reason are trying to capture Dandy, as he is supposed to have the key that controls the universe; but Dandy is never aware of them, as he is more worried about his looks and finding new alien species.
One of the highlights, and ironically, the letdown of the series, is the fact that many episodes seem unlinked, as they unveil very random situations, in which our heroes become zombies and learn how to live “the zombie life” or simply die, just to appear again in the next episode as if it never happened at all.
The Part 1 Blu-ray pack includes a teaser trailer for the series, the broadcast opening, clean ending and a fantastic digital gallery of images from the show.
