‘Soul Eater NOT!’ Blu-Ray Review

Thanks to Madman we had the chance to see ‘Soul Eater’ NOT’ a spin-off of the acclaimed series ‘Soul Eater’ on high quality Blu-ray.

Soul Eater NOT!‘ centres on the daily lives of Tsugumi, Anya and Meme who study at The Death Weapon Meister Academy (DWMA), an elite school which trains weapons and the meisters who’ll wield them.

soul eater not 1Tsugumi has the extraordinary ability of transforming herself into a weapon, but is incapable of controlling her power. On the other hand, Anya and Meme seem to have the skills required to be great meisters. Our trio joins the NOT (Normally Overcome Target) class to learn to control their powers. Anya and Meme want Tsugumi as a partner but she can’t decide which one will be the chosen one as her decision will probably affect their friendship.

Suddenly, a threat erupts in the school when a powerful witch named Shaula begins to control the minds of the students, compelling them to kill themselves and others. While older students, such as Maka, Soul, Clay, Akane, and Eternal Feather, (among other famous characters from Soul Eater) defend the school, our main students confront the witch in order to rescue their friend.

This prequel series is a cute anime like K-On, as the main characters and their simple lives feature many cute and funny moments. However, after the first attack we can see the darkness and intensity of the battles. It’s good to see a strong and determined main character such as Tsugumi as the lead. She brings out the best of the people surrounding her, without it taking away from her heroic cuteness and vulnerability.

soul eater not 2The animation is well executed, and there are great battle sequences and powerful death scenes. Furthermore, it will come as a relief to Soul Eater fans to see familiar characters joining the trio in small cameos or short scenes.

Madman brings ‘Soul Eater NOT!‘ to Australia on Blu-ray and DVD. The Blu-ray collection includes episode commentaries, Soul Eater Whoops! (dubbing mistakes), commercial collection, textless songs and a U.S. trailer.
