Danganronpa: The Animation Review

Thanks to Madman we had the chance to see the suspenseful anime series Danganronpa on Blu-Ray.

danganronpa 1Only the best students are accepted at the prestigious Hope’s Peak Academy. However, the student’s joy about having been accepted quickly vanishes when they meet the sadistic school administrator, a mechanic teddy bear, Monokuma, whose only wish is to force the students to turn against each other. The only way to graduate and leave the school is to force someone to kill a classmate. This must be done without being charged after facing the school tribunal; and the entire class must find the culprit. However, there is one catch: if you accuse the wrong person, the entire tribunal is to be killed.

Based on the popular video game franchise created and developed by Spike Chunsoft, Danganronpa, at its best is suspenseful and highly addictive. Each episode is a rollercoaster of plot twists that force viewers to draw their own conclusions – a kind of Saw meets Battle Royale, that doesn’t provide sufficient clues to unveil the truth.

danganronpa 2Thus, this thriller is addictive, and the last episodes and the ending tend to overcomplicate things with unnecessary elements, including an annoying character with a split personality and a couple of underdeveloped subplots.

Overall, Danganronpa could have been flawless, as each of the episodes features great animation, good characters, and plot twists, but the formula becomes a little belaboured by the end.
