Nik Lone – ‘These pictures won’t tell you’ Review

Born from a self imposed musical hiatus, Nik Lone‘s debut album, These pictures won’t tell you is haunting, melancholy, reflective and vivid in soundscapes and melody. Recorded in Sydney and Melbourne with Tim Whitten (Powderfinger, Augie March, Gaslight Radio) and Haydyn Buxton (Cat Empire) on engineering duties, these pictures won’t tell you showcases a songwriting ability rarely heard these days, with each track layered enough to compliment rather than clash to take the lead.

The first single, We’re Dying Alone illustrates Nik’s unique vocal qualities, ranging from breathy tones to soaring phrases. Though lyrically sombre, the song remains philosophical rather than wallowing in gloom.

The opening track, Raining, starts with a piano phrase reminiscent of rain pattering outside your window, while The Love Inside sweeps through a bare accompaniment with the closing track Will Come further exhibits Nik’s angelic vocal characteristics.

With and album launch on September 11 at the Northcote Social Club, Nik will be joined on stage by Sarah Curro, Danny Richardson, Benjamin McCarthy for a rare one-off live performance, before again heading to New York City to promote the new album.
