Forming in Seattle, Washington, indie rock outfit Minus The Bear is a name you may have come across in the early 2000’s. With their interesting fusion of math rock/alternative sound influences, it’s safe to say their music will intrigue you one way or another. The last time the band was here was when Soundwave Festival was still running, making their Australian visit long overdue.

Though it’s been a while, fans can be stoked over the fact that they’ll be coming back next month, doing the rounds in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. Bass player Corey Murchy was kind enough to answer some questions for us about the tour, the release of their sixth album VOIDS this year and playing with Foo Fighters and Soundgarden.

I think the last time you played here was at Soundwave Festival. How do you feel about playing Australia again?

It’s been far too long since we’ve played in Australia! We’re all really excited about coming back. Hopefully these shows go well and we can come back with more regularity.

You’ve released six albums so far in your career to date. How would you describe your journey so far?

We started this band in our early 20’s and now we’re all hovering around 40 so there has been a ton of growth as a band. This journey has been rich with experience and life lessons, to say the least!

In March, you released your sixth album VOIDS. What was the process like for that record?

It starts with Dave [Knudson] and his guitar. His parts are really the centre of the songwriting process and most of the songs form around it. Alex [Rose, keyboards/backing vocals] also filled a bigger role on VOIDS with arrangements, melodies and even wrote lyrics for a handful of songs.

Compared to your previous material, what would you say were the main challenges of making this one?

Just staying the course can be hard. It’s easy to let self-doubt and the outside world come crashing down on you when you are in the middle of creating something out of nothing, but we had our hearts set on the bigger picture. We knew we had to keep trudging on and I’m thankful we did.

You’ve toured with Soundgarden, Jimmy Eat World, and Foo Fighters. How have those experiences shaped you as a band?

It always offers perspective. At the end of the day, we are all just a bunch of dudes that still enjoy getting on stage to perform. It’s a dream job that also takes a lot of work and dedication and it’s constant.

You’ve been a band for around 15 years now. Throughout this journey, what are your proudest achievements to date?

I’m proud of us for keeping it together this long. It hasn’t always been the easiest thing to do, but I think we all still feel there is more to accomplish with this band.

If you could give your youngest selves advice now, what would you say to them?

Keep going. It won’t always be easy but hang in there. Drink more water, too.
