Sydney electronic-pop trio Glades have released their highly-anticipated debut album To Love You, available now via all retailers and digital service providers. To celebrate the release Glades have also announced the release of the official video the album’s ARIA Gold single Do Right, which to date has received a staggering 60million streams.
Following their recent performances at Listen Out 2018 alongside A$AP Rocky, Skrillex, Snake Hips, Confidence Man and more, Glades will embark on a national headline tour.
To find out more we had the chance to chat with one of the bands’ multi-instrumentalists Joey Wenceslao.
How hard is to do electro pop in Australia? What are the challenges of the industry?
We live in this “laptop era” where if you want to make any kind of art and have people hear it, everything is just a click away, which is the coolest thing! In terms of making electro pop, it comes pretty naturally to us I think. Our album To Love You is kind of the middle of a venn diagram of all the music we each listen to individually. As a whole the industry can make it easy to forget who you are or what you want to say, so it’s really important to hold on to why you started making music in the first place.
How was your experience playing at Listen Out 2018?
It was our first touring festival and it was great! A festival is an opportunity play in front of people that wouldn’t normally listen to us, so hopefully we convinced a few more people!
Did you get to see or meet some of the other names on the bill like Skrillex?
We got to watch people like Skrillex and ASAP Rocky – the energy they have on stage in insane. We ran into Brockhampton in the hotel lobby and they asked us if there were any bugs, snakes, or spiders around that could kill them. They said it was their first time in Australia haha. Bless their souls.
Your new single ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ is very catchy. How was the song writing process for the song and for the album in general?
Thanks! We usually start with a beat & some chords, then put melodies and lyrics to that. Other songs like Through To You started with a lyric idea though. I overheard Karina watching Grey’s Anatomy one day and someone said “what do I have to do to get through to you.” Felt like that would make a good line in a song!
You are about to hit the road for a tour. What fans can expect about Glades on tour?
We’re going on tour at the end of November through to the start of December! We’re going to have visuals on screens this tour so that it’s more of a full experience. We’re preparing some special moments too that you’ll get to see during the show!
What message would you give to young aspiring Australian musicians?
If you know what you love to do, give it everything you’ve got. At the start, the most important thing is finishing songs. Make finishing the metric. Even if you don’t like what you make at the start, you’ll get one that you love eventually! And then you get hooked on making something you’re proud of.
