The international DAMN AM Skateboard Event is in Australia for the first time ever this month attracting skaters from around the world to Sydney’s Northern Beaches.
The premier amateur street skateboarding event is on 21st – 23rd July at Mona Vale Skate Park in Mona Vale – the venue replicating World Championship standards.
Street skateboarding focuses on tricks that utilise the natural urban environment such as ledges, stairs, rails and gaps. This contest also includes street and elements of terrain that are transition or ramp based.
Up to 150 skaters are expected to battle it out for the DAMN AM champion title that will guarantee them a spot in the semi-final of the TAMPA AM, that leads into the SLS Pro Open World Championships.
International skaters from the USA and Japan including 16 year old Daisuke Ikedaask from Tokyo will be flying in for the event – he recently won the DAMN AM in California.
A strong contingent of local competitors includes 21 year old Mikey Mendoza, the first person to receive a sporting scholarship to Sydney University through skateboarding.
15 year old Noah Nayef from Bass Hill, has been competing internationally for the past three years is a favourite to make it on to the professional circuit through this event with a win.
Hayley Wilson, 15 year old from Mansfield, Victoria is Australia’s leading female skateboarder and first ever female to make it into the X Games Street Skateboarding Contest this year and will be competing in DAMN AM shortly after.
Last year Hayley won the largest female skateboard contest in the world in her age group – the Exposure Female Skateboard Contest U16.
“Street skateboarding is growing in popularity ahead of its debut as an Olympic sport in Tokyo in 2020 because it’s fun and accessible – you don’t need an entire team or referee to participate, you can skate anywhere anytime,” said Event Organiser Hagan McCreath.
“We are excited NIKE Australia has come on board as the title sponsor for this year and next year we expect the event will be an Olympic Qualifier for Australia,” said Mr McCreath.
“Last year Australian Shane O’Neill won the SLS Pro Open crowning him World Champion so we have some elite talent in this country that’s growing every day.”
“This event has been going for 16 years and is the path to professional skateboarding with Canada, Portugal, China, the U-S and Brazil among the countries hosting it in the past.”

The DAMN AM Skateboard Event is part of the Global DAMN AM Series and is a qualifier to professional Street League Skateboarding. It is being held at Mona Vale Skate Park at Kitchener Park Mona Vale, NSW on July 21st-23rd. Open Qualifying is on 21st, Semi-Finals on the 22nd and Finals on Sunday 23rd.

The TAMPA AM Winner and the DAMN AM skater of the Year will both qualify to skate at the SLS Pro Open (Street League Skateboarding Pro Open) which is the World Championship for Street Skateboarding. Last Year Shane O’Neill an Australian won the SLS Pro Open – being crowned the World Champion.
