Thanks to Madman we had the chance to see the complete collection of ‘Stella Women’s Academy, High School Division Class C3’ on DVD.
Yura is a timid girl who is starting high school at Stella Women’s Academy. She has no inclination to join any clubs, but her roommate, Sonora, suddenly invites her to join hers without even telling her what it’s about.
Led by Sonora the club, named C3 (Command, Control and Communications), is not a normal club. It specialises in survival games, something Yura is unfamiliar with and which doesn’t really seem to fit her personality. However, the C3 members don’t give up easily and, after stalking Yura, they finally convince her to join the club, where they help her to develop her skills and embrace gun power by competing in different team survival games.
The animation giant GAINAX (Neon Genesis Evangelion, Mahoromatic) presents this refreshing comedy, which is somehow different from the many other high school comedies we’ve seen before. C3 is a beautiful light anime that embrace friendship, competition and forgiveness.
The series can easily be compared to K-On!, but this one is different in that the girls actually practice their strategies, rather than spending the whole time having cake or tea. This gives this series a more serious focus, but it is not free of some great comedic moments.
The characters are well-developed and each has a distinctive personality, which makes them appealing to a wide target audience. In addition, the series is a good example of how fan-service is not always needed to grab the attention of viewers. C3 has none and instead focuses more on the story and some unexpected twists which transform this light comedy into a strong drama that leaves a solid message of friendship at the end.
