Set in the seaside neighborhood of Uchiura at Numazu city, “Sunshine” is the successor of the animated hit series Love Live! and follows Chika, a young student who idolises the “u’s”. She’s so inspired she starts to look for members to form her own school idol group. This won’t be easy as Chika must also get approval from the president of the student council, who is against idols for no apparent reason.
Does the plot sounds familiar? Sadly, yes. That’s the main problem with Love Live! Sunshine; it brings nothing new to the story. It’s just more of the same, which makes it both predictable and eventually frustrating as you go through each episodes with the hope that something new might happen.
The series is literally a copy/paste job. There are still amusing moments and some fun comedic gags, and the art and animation are well-made, especially the sea vistas featured in almost every episode. The soundtrack is another highlight, and the songs showcased are charming enough to keep Love Live fans entertained.
Overall, Love Live! Sunshine!! is a very unnecessary follow-up for an anime hit that even had a movie to give proper closure. It’s just fun at best, but nothing more than that.
