About The Wayward Trickster

Hi there! My name’s Ruth, and I am your run-of-the-mill Cosplayer. I’ve recently taken on the moniker ‘The Wayward Trickster” for Cosplay related things. The name comes from a combo of my favourite song – (Carry On) My Wayward Son, by Kansas… and one of my favourite comic characters, Loki – Marvel Comics. Recently my Cosplay focus has been on loveable villains and those slightly grey characters, so it comes into play there too.

By day I work your average job, but by night you’ll find me obsessively reblogging on tumblr or stalking the Internet for Cosplay materials/reference photos for my most recent brain children. I’m a one-project girl, so even though I have a list of “to-do” Cosplay’s I focus on one until it is complete before moving on!!

1.    When did this fascination for Cosplaying started?

Growing up I always loved dressing up and costume parties. But I first got into Cosplaying in 2009.

2.    What was the first Cosplay you ever did??

My first Cosplay was Suigintou from Rozen Maiden. I was so nervous I didn’t even make it myself, a friend did!!

3.    What was the first convention you went to?
Brisbane Supanova in 2009, I went as Yuuki from Vampire Knight

4.    What is your favourite character and why? (Favourite character or favourite character to Cosplay??)

My favourite character is probably Jareth, the Goblin King. I like the enigma that he is meant to be this massive villain but all the stuff he’s doing is just what Sarah asked for.

My favourite character to Cosplay was probably Lady Hades. I had such a good time meeting Disney fans at the con in it!!

5.    What is your most precious costume? How long did it take you to make it?

Sarah Williams from Jim Henson’s Labyrinth

Sarah Williams from Jim Henson’s Labyrinth

Definitely Sarah Williams from Labyrinth. She’s such a headstrong character and I have always been able to relate to her a lot. I made her ball gown and it took about three months to get right. I’m dying to give it an airing, so maybe it will reappear soon!!

6.    Can you name a character you are planning to portray in the near future?

Ooh sneak preview! I have my heart set on creating the Jabberwocky from ‘Once Upon a Time in Wonderland’… I also have Enchantress from Marvel Comics on my radar.

7.    A costume you dream to be able to have/make someday?

My super-duper dream Cosplay is to do a ball gown version of Lady Loki. Something very elegant, but still sinister looking.

8.    Have you ever joined or done a group Cosplay performance?

I have been a part of a Cosplay group, but never in a skit. At a recent convention I joined in a Game of Thrones group as Margaery Tyrell, as a favour for my bestie

9.    Have you ever participated in any Cosplay competition? (If yes, which ones?)

It’s a hard one to avoid if you’re in the game long enough! I’ve been in the Gold Coast Supanova Cosplay Competition twice now, hoping to enter the Brisbane one later this year

10.    Any funny convention or Cosplay story you can share with us?

I think my funniest story starts out a bit tragically. I went as Emma Frost, the White Queen, from X-Men… but all day people were constantly calling me Lady GaGa. By the end of the day I had completely given up and was just screaming with people going “YEAH GAGA”. It was still good fun and amusing to look back on now… clearly that costume needs a bit more work!

11.    Have you had any strange encounters with fans of you/or the character you are portraying?

I’m not a well-known Cosplayer, but I did go as Zatanna one year and she has exposed corsetry in her outfit. I had quite a few blokes coming up telling me how nice the cut was on the leotard, or how sexy my boobs looked… I felt like I needed a sign saying “My eyes are up here”… but the con crews are really great to go to if you feel like someone has gone too far!

12.    Any word of advice for people who would like to start in the world of Cosplay?

Don’t feel bad if you don’t hand make your first Cosplay! Sewing or crafting isn’t a natural talent for everyone. If you want to ease yourself in with a bought or compiled costume you go for it! The number one rule of Cosplay is HAVE FUN!!!
